When it comes to the outdoor aesthetics of a home, vinyl siding has been one of the most popular. Aside from being offered in a variety of styles and colors, the selling features of siding also include durability and low maintenance.

There are however, some steps you should take periodically to upkeep your siding to ensure it lasts you for the long run.

In order to keep your siding looking like new, you’ll want to protect it. But, your good intentions could do more harm than good if you aren’t mindful. Here are our Top 5 Tips to Take Care of Your Siding:

    1. Avoid Painting Over Siding
If your siding is lacking it’s lustre you might be tempted to paint it in order to bring it back to life. We absolutely do not recommend painting over your siding. In time, the paint will start to crack and peel. Another consideration is that the manufacturer could void the warranty.
Pro Tip – if you really want to paint your vinyl siding, hire a professional. A professional will properly clean, prime, and apply a vinyl-safe paint.
  • Immediately Repair Damage
If you find any damage to your vinyl siding, it’s important to address it immediately by calling a professional! Any cracks or spacing could allow moisture into the walls and this will affect temperature regulation in your home. Left untreated, the moisture can lead to rot, mold, and mildew which could have a major impact on your home’s structure.

  • Perform Regular Vinyl Siding Cleaning
Just as you would clean the interior home on a regular basis, the same can be said for your exterior. Regular cleaning of your vinyl siding should be done every 6 months to 1 year. Vinyl is very easy to clean if you have the right cleaning solutions and tools to do the job. Avoid harsh chemicals that will damage the material. A list of chemicals to avoid include:
    – concentrated bleach (undiluted)
    – agents used for furniture cleaning
    – grease remover
It’s also important to use a vinyl safe scrubber which means steel wool or anything else that is considered an abrasive is a no go. The best way to clean your vinyl involves just soap and a soft bristle brush. Avoid using a pressure washer.
  • Get Rid of Mold and Mildew
Like many things that are subjected to water, mold and mildew can happen to your vinyl as well. The best course of action is to stay on top of it and get rid of it as soon as you see it. It does involve a bit more work than your standard cleaning but it’s important to do a thorough job so that a little problem doesn’t become a big one. You can make your own home based solution using 1 cup of vinegar for every gallon of water.
  1. Avoid BBQing Near Your Vinyl
Even though your vinyl can withstand the sun and heat that comes with it, an open flame is a different story. It’s natural to want to put your grill up against the side of your house however, it should be kept several feet away to avoid warping or melting the siding.
